City Welcomes New Council Members

dsc 0025 resizedReelected Mayor Gary McCullough and the newly elected Dahlonega City Council Members, Roman Gaddis, Michael Clemons and Mitchell Ridley, took the oath of office at the first Council meeting of 2014 on Monday, January 6. City Clerk Lou Stewart conducted the swearing in ceremony. In attendance were family, friends and representatives from the Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners, Chairman Chris Dockery and Commissioner Clarence Grindle. Mayor Gary McCullough welcomed the new Council Members and said he is "confident they will all do their best to serve the residents of Dahlonega."

The Dahlonega City Council is composed of 6 Council Members and the Mayor. Each member serves for four years and is responsible for enacting ordinances, resolutions and regulations governing the City.

Council meetings are open to the public and held the first Monday of every month, 6 PM at Dahlonega City Hall, 465 Riley Road.

'Tis the Season

collageIn appreciation for another year of dedication and hard work, City Council members and spouses celebrated Christmas with City employees and their families. The annual celebration was held at The Smith House and was a great time of food, fun and fellowship!!

Streetscape Planning

befunky img 5443.jpgThe team responsible for guiding the design, construction and maintenance of downtown's streetscape project met to walk Phase 1 and discuss the current construction timeline. Downtown's streetscape project focuses on improvements to pedestrian safety and landscaping. This includes enhancements to sidewalks, trees, medians, lighting and street furniture. The City has been awarded state and federal grant money to fund 80% of the project's design and engineering. Construction for three blocks of West Main and South Chestatee is scheduled to begin Winter 2015.

City Employees Participate in Career Day

photoThird, fourth, and fifth grade students met with the City of Dahlonega's Water Treatment Plant Supervisor, John Jarrard, and Waste Water Treatment Plant Supervisor, Allan McCallister, during Blackburn Elementary School's Career Day. Career Day provides the opportunity for students to visualize future career options by engaging in conversations with local professionals. Dahlonega City Manager, Bruce Georgia, stated, "Any opportunity our employees have to talk with our community's youth is important to us as an organization." Mr. Jarrard and Mr. McCallister spoke to the students about the City's management process to provide safe, quality drinking water for Dahlonega residents.

Blackburn Elementary School Assistant Principal, Dr. Linda Parr, said, "We are always very appreciative that local city employees take the time to speak with our students." Throughout the day, students participated in many activities that taught them about different types of careers. Dr. Parr continued to speak on how Career Day benefits Dahlonega-Lumpkin County by helping students "learn new possibilities for them to become as adults while having fun!"

Blackburn Elementary will hold a career day for kindergarten through second grade in March 2014.

First Friday Night Concert Information

The First Friday concerts are held in downtown Dahlonega's beautiful Hancock Park. All concerts begin at 6:30 PM. Mark your calendar now and make your plans to attend each event. Bring friends, family, and lawn chairs and enjoy the fun in downtown Dahlonega. Dancing and socializing are encouraged! Arrive early, enjoy excellent downtown shopping, and pick up your picnic from any of downtown's popular restaurants.
